Presidential Elections & Grants

Hi all! This is Dr. Kim. This was not the original introductory Grant Gems with Dr. Kim planned but my team and I are in receipt of your calls, emails, and texts and felt compelled to address your concerns.

At KSTB, we are aware that the outcome of a presidential election can have significant effects on grants and funding priorities, especially in areas like education, healthcare, social services, environmental protection, and technology. Each administration has unique priorities, often shifting resources toward certain sectors and issues, which affects both the availability of grants and the eligibility criteria.

Here’s how:

A new administration often emphasizes different priorities based on its policy goals, potentially increasing or decreasing grants for specific areas. For instance, an administration focused on green energy and climate might increase grants for renewable energy projects, conservation, and climate research. On the other hand, an administration prioritizing defense might allocate more funds to grants in national security or technology.

New policies can lead to changes in eligibility requirements, application processes, and reporting standards. Nonprofits, businesses, and research institutions may need to adjust their strategies or broaden their focus to align with new government priorities to remain competitive in grant applications.

Each president’s budget proposal impacts federal agencies, which in turn affects the grants they provide. For example, the Department of Education may see increased or decreased funding depending on the administration’s stance on education policy, directly affecting grants for schools, educators, and educational nonprofits.

An administration’s approach to regulation, particularly in healthcare, social services, or the environment, can influence grant availability and compliance requirements. For example, shifts in healthcare policy could impact grants for public health initiatives, while environmental regulations could affect funding for sustainability projects.

New administrations may create partnerships with private entities, nonprofits, and state governments, opening up new avenues for funding through public-private partnerships and collaboration-focused grants.

This happens with every election. KSTB monitors each new administration’s goals. We work to stay informed about changes in federal funding priorities and inform our clients about anticipatory shifts in available funding so that they can adjust their applications to align with emerging opportunities.
